Recently at the Rainbow Push Coalition there were a group of people from Latin America, called the caravan, spoke about gang violence and how they want it to end. During the meeting three individuals spoke about their own experiences with gang problems in Latin America. One man spoke about how his aunt, a lawyer, was fighting for equality but received death threats from the government, and she had to flee to the United States to gain asylum. Even while in the United States she was still treated unfairly and unable to see her family. The other speakers talked about how gang violence affected their personal lives, and how members of their families would go missing with no way to locate them. The most important thing I took away from the speakers is that violence occurs around the world, and people want a way out of that life style but can’t due to their situations. Also, the Rainbow Push Coalition does not just fight for African American rights but all races to be equal and free from oppressive governments. The Rainbow Push Coalition helps those countries that are experiencing injustice and inequality by spreading the message of equality and encouraging people to fight for that cause.
During my time at the Rainbow Push Coalition I have learned many things about Reverend Jesse Jackson’s fight for equality. Reverend Jesse Jackson founded the Rainbow Push Coalition in the December of 1996 when he merged PUSH, founded in 1971, and the Rainbow Coalition, founded in 1984. Reverend Jackson fights to give all the right to be an United States’ citizen and to bring justice and peace throughout the world. Reverend Jackson’s headquarters are located in the Kenwood community area of Chicago and is home to Doctor Martin Luther King Jr’s workshop. Inside Reverend Jackson’s headquarters there is also a live broadcast filmed where members of the Rainbow Push Coalition speak against injustice and Spread their cause throughout the world. Something that I personally did to get involved in the organization was spreading the message of Rainbow Push by calling Chicago residents. In the phone call I would inform people about meetings or special events. Those events consisted of brunches honoring teachers and other outstanding individuals. During my time at the Rainbow Push Coalition I was able to take part in these events by helping set up the tables, chairs, and other items. While observing these events take place it opened my mind to the injustices that take place around the world.
During my time at Growing Power I have learned many things such as some plants favor certain climates,
composting is an important part of farming, and how locally grown food is
important to communities. During my few hours of volunteering at Growing Power I
learned that plant can grow in different climates. Plants like kale, broccoli,
beets, celery, and lettuce can survive in the frigid cold months of winter.
Mushrooms are also an unusual crop they can grow without any sunlight making
this crop, like others, being able to be grown year round.
Composting is an important
part of growing plants. The composting is important to growing crops because it
causes the soul to have more nutrients, and it helps the plants to grow. I have also learned that composting is
a cycle the vegetables that are left over are feed to worms which eat them and
the worms’ waste is used to grow the plants because it is now high in
nutrients.
Locally grown food is
important to communities because it is more fresh and cheaper. Locally grown
food is healthier for the environment because it does not have to be transported
by trucks or planes that emit harmful CO²
gasses.
